The Darkness In Myths

While myths also give people many things to worship and hope for it also gives them things to fear and regret. Within every myth and story and lore there is a dark side or negative. Many of the myths about gods have dark portions in their stories. For example Poseidon the god of the sea one of the 3 gods that stand above all else was said to have raped the women that then became the gorgon known as medusa. There are many of these stories but its not just that gods don’t act how we believe they should but also some stories are just meant to scare people. For example the stories of the Boogeyman is a mythical creature used by parents to frighten children into good behavior.  And this is not the only myth or stories like this there are many, many more the slender man, the wendigo, and the kraken just to name a few. Every mythos has creatures like this.

Where They Live

Many myths and legends have specific places where they live giving those place a grater importance in our eyes. An example of this is mount Olympus where most of the Greek gods lived and ruled. This mountain became a holy ground in the eyes of the people that worshiped these gods even with out knowing why they would leave offering and pray to it and the gods that lived on it. This kind of worship can be seen all over the world most of the time there places of worship are mountains or caves even man made buildings. Those that worship each respective entity that lives there protect by there people and these places. Even Hero’s have their places of worship and so do some demons. The myths and legends affect our relationship the world and its importance to us.

Filling In The Blanks

Many of the myths and legends we have were developed to fill in the blanks that we had in the past. We the human race fear the unknown all creatures fear the unknown if you have a friends over for the first time and your dog sees them there first instinct is to be afraid and cautious. We’re the same we have more questions and when they can’t be answered we make our own answers. Some of our answers are based in truth but we fill in the blanks with our ideas. For example weather in the past we didn’t know about how storms are formed but we knew the sighs that one was coming. This could be the reason that some myths give the power to call storms, tragedies, and plagues to gods and demons. Many stories give them powers and abilities to give reason and explanations about the world and what happens around us.

Influencing Our Actions

Many myths and folktales have an effect on how people and society act. This is done by saying that certain actions lead to punishment by the dogs or creatures of the stories and myths. Not all actions are labeled as good and evil for example some of the things that had to be done to avoid punishment where sacrifices. Those will be deemed as evil actions now but not in the past. Some the stories were directly pointed towards children to keep them from  being disobedient one full tail but accomplished this is the story of the crying woman this frightened children into behaving. Every culture has a folktale like this one some more terrifying than others but all working towards the same purpose to Control the actions of children in some to direct the actions adults. All of the actions are depending on society and what they find good and evil.

Viewing the world Backwords

The way we view the world shapes the stories we tell each other. These stories help us retain some level of rationality with in this world. For example when we have no idea what the sun is we tell our selves that it is actually a god that rides thru the sky being followed by the moon. Back then stories were told that when a specific god or mythical creature feels anger a natural disaster occurs. An example of this is with Poseidon Greek god of the sea, it was told that when he was upset he would create Tsunamis. These kinds of stories also lead to superstitions and rituals that had to be fulfilled in order to avoid catastrophes. For example to use Poseidon again sailors, fishermen, and navigators offered sacrifices to Poseidon in order to ensure but The bounty of fish safe travels and wind on the sea.

Starting Down The Path.

Many civilizations and cultures base their myths and legends on there knowledge of the world. Some civilizations used myths and legends In order to give their world some from of meaning and order. This is what makes it possible for us to see the world thru the eyes of our ancestors. We can also use this to understand the story we till right now not just the stories of the past. The more we actuality look at some of our stories we can see many similarities with stories from the past. This gives us a deeper understanding into our current view of the world and into our society. Many of the stories we use today are our subconscious desired to give our life meeting and to give a name or a face to the things that we don’t understand this is something that has been done many times over the years many stories evolving and changing throughout that time.
